Gold gravity separation makes use of gravity forces of materials with different density and difference of mineral granules to enrich gold from the ore. Gravity separation is widely used in gold enrichment for both placer gold ore and rock gold ore. Gravity separation can separate gold from the impurities because there is a big density difference between gold and impurities.
 
Gravity separation is the most common, most important and the simplest method to extract gold from the gangue. The gravity separators for gold ore concentration cover jiggers, spiral chute, centrifugal separator, shaking table. The feeding size for each gravity separator is different. And before separation, screening or classifying will be a necessity.
 
Gravity separation is also an important beneficiation method for quartz gold ore. And usually gravity separation and floatation separation can be combined to work together. The gravity separation can recover the coarse gold when milling making it better for further floatation separation and cyaniding and improving the recovery rate.
 
The beneficiation flow sheet of placer gold is gravity separation to get heavy sand mixed together with other heavy metals. And then gravity separation, floatation separation, amalgamation separation, magnetic separation and electricity separation can be involved to separate the heavy metals to recover metals. The separation processing covers crushing, screening, desliming, and separation.
 
1.  Crushing and screening

There are sticky mud blocks in the alluvial gold ore with its Dia. of +100mm. This mud can not be easy to break and if discharged together with other waste stone, a big gold loss will be made. If the sticky ore canbe also stuck to the gravels and loss of gold turn up again.

On gold separation ship, crushing and screening can be finished by rotary screen. There is spiral angle iron, un-continuous. Washing water of +35 thousand Pa on the ore will liberate the sticky ore from the gravels and the mud blocks. For hand separation, washing machine will be needed to break and liberate the sticky minerals. Hydraulic giants of Pinggui 50 or I-100 model are used on diagonal direction with output pressure over 20000Pa.

Screening operation, as the necessary work of gold separation, can removing 20%-40% of the waste stone. The screen holes are usually 10-20mm in China, and if fixed sluice is used, the hole can be bigger, but no more than 60mm. Some factories use screen of grizzly screen, vibrating screen while ships adopt rotary screen. And all screens need water to wash out the sticky ore out.
 
2.   Dewatering

There is usually no gold in placer gold less than 0.1mm and the gold is very hard to separate. So in placer gold beneficiation factories, mud of -0.1mm is usually removed for separation of shaking table or centrifugal separator. Desliming bucket is usually used in practical operation. Sluice allows wide treatment size with its big treatment capacity, so there is no need for disliming for sluice separation.
 
3.  Beneficiation/Dressing

It proves that gravity separation is the most efficiency and economical beneficiation method. Reasonable placer gold separation needs combination of several gravity separators to work because the placer gold ore size rang is large and plants' treating size can be a certain range.
 
Concentrate from rough separation is about 100g/t while heavy sand of 1-2kg/t. For high grade rough gold concentrate, there are three methods to deal with:
a. concentrating pan to get gold granules and desert the heavy sand
b. amalgamation to get amalgam and desert the heavy sand
c. after hand separation by concentrating pan or amalgamation, take the heavy sand to the factory to separate the other metals.
 
Recovery rate of gold separation: two-phrase sluice: 70-74% while it is 75-80% for rough separation of sluice, scavenging by jigger and fine separation by shaking table.
